IBM has launched an initiative to support urban resilience through AI-driven solutions. As part of its IBM Sustainability Accelerator program, the company has selected five organizations to develop AI-based projects aimed at addressing challenges in cities. The selected organizations—C40 Cities, the U.N. World Food Programme, Mass General Brigham, Janaagraha Centre for Citizenship and Democracy,
Each project aims to leverage AI for practical urban solutions, addressing pressing global challenges. C40 Cities will create an AI-powered system to assess extreme heat risks, helping cities better prepare for rising temperatures. Similarly, the U.N. World Food Programme will enhance its geospatial tool to optimize food distribution in vulnerable areas. In healthcare, Mass General Brigham will develop an AI-based tool to predict heat-related health risks, improving early intervention and patient care. In India, Janaagraha Centre will build a data platform to support more efficient urban planning, while in Indonesia, Kota Kita will design AI models to tackle climate challenges in local communities. IBM has committed $45 million to the program through 2030, reinforcing its long-term support for social innovation and global sustainability efforts.
