Carbon Capture in EfW Could Achieve UK Net Zero Goals

ERM, a leading specialist sustainability consultancy, has analyzed the opportunities for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in the UK’s Energy from Waste (EfW) sector in a report, evaluating how CCS on EfW supports the UK’s net zero strategy and targets. The paper, which was commissioned by Viridor, emphasizes that installing CCS on EfW plants might be up to 27% of the UK government's 2035 greenhouse gas removal (GGR) target. Additionally, research shows that CCS on

EfW could provide a carbon-neutral electrical grid by 2035, which would be in line with the country's decarbonization objectives. The report also identifies a substantial economic opportunity, projecting $24 billion in investments and the creation of over 14,000 green jobs by 2050. Notably, six EfW facilities near CO2 storage hubs have announced CCS plans, with two already engaged in government negotiations for funding and anticipated operational readiness by 2027.

The growing adoption of EfW facilities by local authorities has reduced landfill reliance while delivering additional benefits, including electricity generation and material recovery. According to Silvian Baltac, ERM’s Industrial Decarbonization lead, the widespread uptake of CCS in EfW aligns with national sustainability goals, offering transformative potential for investment, regional growth, and job creation. As a sustainability leader with over 50 years of expertise, ERM underscores its commitment to enabling businesses to integrate sustainability, creating innovative pathways to meet immediate and future climate challenges.
